The former American president has died.

Former US President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 101 at his home in southern Georgia, his foundation announced late on Tuesday.

Carter, a Democrat who retired from public life, was the 39th US president, serving one term (1977-1981).

He was a Nobel Peace Prize winner and had been receiving home palliative care since February 2023.

His last public appearance was at the funeral of his wife Rosalynn in November 2023.

Carter was the oldest US president.
