The OceanX Association, in collaboration with the Cape Eleuthera Institute, has succeeded in tagging an animal with a device from a submarine for the first time in history. They tagged and recorded a dominant predator in the deep sea ecosystem – the Bluntnose sixgill.
This is a rare species that dates back to prehistoric times and is older than most dinosaurs. In the past, Dr. Dean Grubbs managed to place a satellite tag on one of these sharks, which is very difficult to catch, but he did so when it was on the surface.
This type of shark can reach a length of up to 6 meters, with an average weight of 500 kilograms. Larger specimens can weigh up to 1,000 kilograms.
