Nearly 300,000 Americans in seven states have been without power since yesterday due to tornadoes and devastating thunderstorms.
Over the weekend, 23 people died in the major storms, and forecasters say more are possible, accompanied by high winds, hail and flash flooding. In the morning, heavy rain is expected to hit the East Coast, including parts of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, the National Weather Service said.
Several people died due to the storm. Eight of them in Arkansas, seven in Texas, two in Oklahoma and five in Kentucky. Two children died in Texas. An elderly woman in Alabama died after a tree fell on her home, and a farmer and his 34 cows were killed by lightning in Colorado.
The NWS also forecast that severe thunderstorms could develop over Texas on Tuesday, with wind gusts reaching 75 mph.
The heat will continue in the south of the country, and record high temperatures are expected.
