In the collision between a passenger and freight train in Pardubice in the Czech Republic late on Wednesday evening, at least four people died and dozens were injured, Czech media reports.
A high-speed train from Prague to Slovakia’s Kosice, carrying about 200 passengers, collided with a freight train in Pardubice, about 100 kilometers east of the Czech capital, it was reported.
A spokeswoman for the local rescue services told Czech television that four people were reportedly killed, dozens were injured, some seriously.
According to the railway administration, the trains collided at the new Pardubice Centrum station, and the collision interrupted traffic on the corridor to Moravia, the Czech Railways website reports.
According to published photos and videos, the trains collided head-on, and at least one carriage of the passenger train derailed and partially overturned.
The Minister of the Interior, Vit Rakušan, and the Minister of Transport, Martin Kupka, immediately went to the scene of the accident, and Prime Minister Petr Fiala also announced the tragedy.
“The collision of two trains in Pardubice is a big accident. We all think of the victims. My sincere condolences to all the survivors,” he told the X Network.
