A habit that can cause at least seven types of cancer.

When it comes to reducing the risk of cancer, we often think about factors such as diet, genetics, or sun exposure.

However, many people do not realize that a common habit, which many practice, can significantly increase the risk of developing cancer. According to experts, this activity is associated with at least seven different types of cancer, making it one of the biggest challenges in the fight for a healthy life.

“Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of various types of cancer by as much as seven times,” warns hepatologist and researcher Dr. Boubou Banini.

The most common types of cancer associated with high alcohol intake include liver cancer, esophageal cancer, oral cavity and throat cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer and breast cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, alcohol causes six percent of all cancer cases and four percent of cancer-related deaths. This means that in a group of 100 people, six of them develop cancer due to alcohol.

Early diagnosis significantly increases the chances of successful treatment
Alcohol contributes to the development of cancer by damaging cells and altering hormones. Ethanol, the key ingredient in alcohol, breaks down into the carcinogenic chemical acetaldehyde, which damages DNA and interferes with normal cell function. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains that damaged cells can grow uncontrollably, which can lead to cancer.

“While it’s okay to have one drink, there is no safe level of alcohol consumption,” says Dr. Banini. People with genetic predispositions or chronic diseases face an even greater risk.

“Also, symptoms of cancer that you should never ignore include gastrointestinal changes, a persistent cough, headaches, aches, skin, breast, or oral changes, chronic fatigue, and unexplained weight loss,” adds Dr. Banini.

Ignoring the feeling that something is wrong can be fatal because early diagnosis significantly increases the chances of successful treatment. If you notice anything unusual, it is important to consult a doctor immediately.
