Five foods for a healthy heart: Eating these reduces the chances of heart disease

As part of a project led by the University of Barcelona, ​​various scientific studies were analyzed to better understand how specific herbs can help treat cardiovascular disease.

In their study, the experts focused primarily on the Mediterranean diet, analyzing the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasodilatory effects of several key ingredients.

Garlic, saffron, olives, rosemary and grapes were among the foods featured, with claims that they contain “active components” beneficial to heart health.

“Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally, responsible for 32% of deaths in 2019,” the study authors wrote.

“Plant extracts rich in bioactive compounds have contributed significantly to modern medicine, offering therapeutic potential for a variety of diseases.

However, their use is limited due to potential side effects, drug interactions, and a lack of comprehensive preclinical and clinical studies.

“This review aimed to provide insight into the mechanisms of action, clinical evidence, and side effects of key bioactive compounds derived from selected Mediterranean plants that are part of the Mediterranean diet.

The researchers noted that the components of the Mediterranean diet have “promising” potential for reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke, and they also noted that they could be used in the future treatment of atherosclerosis. However, the team stressed the need for further research.
