US President-elect Donald Trump will select Andrew Pick for a position on the National Security Council, where he will deal with the Europe and Eurasia region, US media reports.
Sources close to Trump told Politico that Pick is the favorite, but that “a final decision has not yet been made.”
If the final selection comes, it can be said that it will be one of the most controversial nominations of Trump. Pick was already an operative in the Trump administration, first for Iran and the Middle East, and then moved to a position on the National Security Council for issues related to Russia. He lasted there for three months before leaving office amid an investigation into “suspicious” activities that occurred during his tenure in previous positions.
The investigation was conducted in 2019, and Pick was officially suspected of “espionage”.
Among other things, numerous trips to Qatar and the Czech Republic, where Pick allegedly went for private reasons, were investigated. The reason for leaving for the Czech Republic is stated to be the fact that Pick was in a relationship with a model from this country, with whom, according to the investigation, he discussed confidential issues related to US foreign policy.
In addition, Pick is suspected of requesting confidential emails from other employees of the State Department, as well as of suspicious purchases for private purposes. Among them was the purchase of a Nazi swastika pendant, which he allegedly bought as a gift for his then-girlfriend, who is also Jewish.
These allegations, as well as other accusations, have been denied by Pick’s legal team. They pointed to the fact that the investigation was dropped as evidence that it was “lies and slander” by Trump’s nominee for a key position on the Council.
The investigation has come into focus again after sources close to Trump’s team revealed that Pick will hold a key position in the new administration of the US president.
