32 YEARS ALONE ON AN ISLAND: The world was left without a “modern Robinson Crusoe”

Italian Mauro Morandi, known as the “modern Robinson Crusoe,” has died at the age of 86.

The news of the death of Morandi, a physics professor from Modena, was announced by his family and friends on Facebook.

Since 1989, Mauro Morandi has been the only inhabitant of the deserted island of Budelli. He came across it quite by chance during one of his travels. Namely, to this island, which is located not far from Sardinia, quite by chance when 35 years ago he wanted to sail from Italy to Polynesia.

According to reports, he lived as a hermit on Budelli and took on the role of guardian of that island, where he lived alone for 32 years, before leaving in 2021 due to health problems.

Mauro’s story has traveled the world, and he wrote a book about his adventures. However, Mauro faced his first enemies. They were not some mysterious animals or wild tribes, but a man. Four years ago, the authorities of the marine park of the La Maddalena archipelago kicked him off the island, with plans to build a museum. Morandi had to return to land.

Mauro claimed to feel lonely in civilization and that he did not have many friends who often visited him on the island. He often posted footage of his island adventures over three decades on social media.
